Advantages and Process for Becoming a Member of the Parliamentary Profession
Have you ever wondered why becoming a member of the largest parliamentary profession would benefit you? It’s really very simple—the more you know about good meeting management, the more your organization can accomplish and the less time is involved in meetings.
So what are the advantages? The biggest advantage is knowledge of procedures that expedite a meeting. Organization of the agenda and knowledge of the placement of agenda items is essential to smooth meeting management. Being able to concisely target action, discuss the pros and cons, and vote on the issue keeping in mind the will of the majority—no, I didn’t say consensus! As meeting managers, we believe that our simple six-step process allows all members to be heard in a non-biased manner opening up better discussion and providing a more complete picture for the action proposed. With discussion of only the action proposed, unnecessary personal discussion can be eliminated if the membership is aware of other helping motions that can expedite the process. We believe that knowing how to use your governing documents and rules that relate specifically to your organization are essential to your role as a member of the organization. Membership and active involvement in the parliamentary profession through unit and association meeting attendance and participation can assist members in carrying the knowledge to the application level. Through participation in unit, association, or national level webinars and other workshops, members can share their experiences and guide the new member to new levels of parliamentary expertise. When the individual has studied the guides available, membership in the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP) can be achieved by successfully passing a short examination of basic knowledge.
With continued study, the individual could reach the credentialed level of NAP by again studying the materials available online, in text form, or with a computer software approach and successfully completing a five-part written examination. With this knowledge, the credentialed parliamentarian (RP) could begin accepting clients and assisting others on a pay or no-pay basis in meeting management techniques including scriptwriting and acting as a professional parliamentarian. The next step is achieving the professional registered parliamentarian level or PRP which includes successfully passing a two-day evaluation process of parliamentary skills and would allow the PRP to accept clients for other work including professional presiding, opinion writing, acting as a professional parliamentarian for local, state, and national or international organizations, serving as an expert witness and others.
Membership in the parliamentary profession provides many opportunities for individual growth and advancement as well as wonderful camaraderie and support. Join us and let us welcome you to new opportunities and experiences as you view meeting management on a unique and exciting level.
